This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
